A few weeks ago, Jody and the guys went out and mastered the Three Ridges Hike in George Washington National Forest. I was stuck at home that weekend, but the boys reported one heck of a tough hike. Since there was so much fog that weekend, they were unable to see much of a view while out there, so we decided to return again this weekend for a quick backpacking trip.
It was me and four other guys.
I made many observations, mostly about the male species, while on this trip.
Firstly, There's no such thing as 'men'. They're all boys. Just little boys, and they always will be. I have never before seen anyone so enthralled with a log of ants burning in a fire.
Secondly, they love gear. Gear, gear, gear, gear, gear. From machete's to matches, they love them some gear, and could entertain themselves all day with their toys. They also love crafts. That's right: crafts. Just watch.
Thirdly, they don't wear shirts. Ever.
Fourthly, they eat.
A lot.
I mean, A LOT.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from this weekend:
"Look, there's another one of those weird centipedes!"
"Yeah, I want to watch it burn."
"My ass is...moist."
"Dude, Tobasco sauce and salt KILLED him!" (in reference to a bug)
"I will allow three ants to escape."
"I pooped in the creek."
"Look! Crackers!"
"I was told there would be M&Ms."
"I am all that is man."
Please, now enjoy the entourage of photos I'm about to display. They are all that is Man.
Man Toy
Yep! I was there. Yep! I was happy to get my photo taken. Yep! I usually am.
This and the next few were taken by Jody. He has such a way with a camera. Sigh.
I've seen better photos.
Jody had to go. BAD.
That's a lot of man. That's a lot of nipple.
No one naps better than Jody.
The dog whisperer.
Man craft No. 1. They caught, killed, skinned, gutted, cooked, and ate this snake. It was a process. A bloody, messy, manly process. It was neat.
Man craft No. 2. The perfect walking stick must be carved to a smooth texture, then tightly wrapped with rope. Or something.
More carving, more crafting.
Super good looking.
That's all.

Was that Robert Shadow-ney Jr. with you? What a happy dog he must have been!
I really feel for you around all those boys. That must be... interesting. I believe your observations to be exactly correct.
Wow - you are brave! When I was MUCH younger, I went hiking with Matt, Dad, and all four Malia boys plus their dad. It was terrible. Perhaps the reason why I hate hiking to this day, in fact. I applaud your bravery, your patience, and your iron stomach.
Great job on the backpacking with "the men" I am impressed. There are those girls who will excell in hiking, camping, hunting, etc. That is NOT me, but you are doing an awesome thing. Enjoy yourself.
